The First Days of School

Supplies
School Supply

On the first day of school, the students will bring in their supplies and empty them on top of their desks. We will start by sorting out the students supplies and organizing them inside their desks and for storage. Packs of notebook paper and construction paper will be placed in cabinets for later use. Students will put one pack of their pencils, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, and markers in their pencil pouches and in their desks. The rest will be store and a 2.5 gallon Ziploc bag with their names on them for later use.  I will take a majority of the students supplies and store it. When they need more, I will give them the supplies they brought. So, names will be written on packages.  Journals or composition books will be labeled and stored in their desks for later usage.  Hand sanitizer and Kleenex will also be stored in cabinets for whole class use.

"Do Now"

School Children

While I am greeting students at the door, as students come in they will be advised to get their supplies out and put them on their desks. When they have all of the supplies out and on their desks, they will complete a worksheet that says "All About Me." This sheet will have 5-6 questions that students will answer to let me know a little bit about them. The questions will include:

1) What did you do this summer?

2) What do you like to do for fun?

3) What is your favorite subject? (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading/Language Arts)

4) What do you think 2nd grade will be like?

5) What do you want your teacher to know?

6) Bonus: List any things you like? For example: Tik Tok, Turtles, Taking Pictures, etc.

If students finish early they can chat with a neighbor until the teacher enters the classroom.

Get to know you activities

2 truths and 1 tale

Students will sit in groups of 4 and take turns sharing two truths and one tale about themselves. The other students will have to guess which fact or information that is shared is the tale or not true.

4 Corners

There will be 4 corners in the room marked with numbers 1-4. I will show a PowerPoint that has a question and answer choices that correspond with those numbers. For example, I can ask what is your favorite color? Corner would be blue, Corner 2 would be green, Corner 3 would be red, and Corner 4 would be yellow. Students will move to the corner they like. I will play as well.

Classroom Culture

In order to establish classroom culture I will allow students to take part in making decisions for our classroom on the first day. For instance students will help make our rules, decide how we will choose seating arrangements, choose our class pet, decide on classroom jobs, etc. Students will get to be active participants in how we want our classroom to go. We will also have opportunities to take class votes over snacks and little things that I would normally make decisions on myself. I don't want the classroom to feel like it is just mine but as if it is ours.
